June 2013 Newsletter

Reading: Currently, we are engaged in self-selected stories during reading workshop.  The students are reviewing their strategies by responding to what they have read in their reading notebooks.   We are also reading the story, “The Eerie Canal” aloud and creating journal entries that correlate with the characters in the books.   Please remind your child that they do have nightly reading homework.  Our goal is to read a “just right book” for 150 minutes at home each week, which comes to about 30 minutes a night during the school week.  If they are busy during the week, please remind them to get a head start over the weekends. The weekly task is always due on Fridays. The best way to retain your reading skills is to keep reading.  Be sure to stock up on books for over the summer before school ends!
Writing: During writing workshop, we have teamed up with some peers to write a feature article about an event or activity that occurred in fourth grade.   We will publish these pieces and send home the final works the last week of school.
Math:  In Mrs. Brys‘ class the students are learning about data, time, and graphing. They are wrapping up the book and will be having a culminating book test on June 14th.  Mr. Micieli and Mrs. Gildea’s math classes are working on tessalations.  All of the students will benefit from practicing their multiplication/division facts each night!
Science & Social Studies: We have completed our NYS science testing and will be exploring owl pellets!.  This is always a great mini unit that the kids are excited about.
During social studies we’ve discussed the three branches of government and learned about the importance of our checks and balance system.   We will end the year with learning about the Erie
Canal and Industrial Revolution.
