4TH GRADE WITH MRS.BRYS!                                                                          2013
February Newsletter
Current Curriculum
Reading:
We will be learning about tall
tales and analyzing the literary components of tall tales. We will also be developing our close reading skills to prepare for the upcoming state assessments. Both the ELA and Math assessments will be in April. We will be working on developing our comprehension skills as we analyze various poems, stories, and non-fiction pieces.
Please remind your child that they do have nightly reading homework. Our goal is to read 150 minutes a week, which come to about 30 minutes a night. If they are busy during the week, please remind them to get a head start over the weekends. The weekly task is always due on Fridays.

Writing: We have been creating our biographical sketches and will be sending them home soon. We will also be describing the things we hold dear to our hearts in our Valentine piece, as a means to develop our 5 paragraph essays.

Math: In Mrs. Brys’ class, the students are currently doing a Math In Focus mini unit on measuring Angles. Our next Topic in Envisions will be Topic 9 and pertains to fractions and decimals. In Mrs. Gildea’s and Mr.Micieli’s math classes the students are learning about fractions. All of the students will benefit from practicing their multiplication/division facts each night!

Science & Social Studies:
In science, the students will begin a unit on electricity. This is an inquiry based unit that is always very exciting for the students.
We have learned about our local Dutch Heritage and created delft tiles to celebrate our learning. We’ve read quite a bit on the Dutch colonization and used that information to create trivia cards. We then got into groups and played board games with our own developed Trivia Cards. I think we have an idea for Parker Brothers!! We are currently learning about the French and Indian War and will soon be learning about English colonization and the Revolutionary War.

Health:
We’ve discussed personal safety and nutrition. The students read about the digestive system and will exploring myplate.gov to learn about building a nutritious diet.
