May 2013 Newsletter

Reading:  We’ve completed the New York State ELA exams and are happy to be done with them.  We are now engaging in literature circles around Jean Fritz stories and books on theAmerican Revolutionary War.  We will soon begin other books around kid/school stories.   Please remind your child that they do have nightly reading homework.  Our goal is to read a “just right book” for 150 minutes at home each week, which comes to about 30 minutes a night during the school week.  If they are busy during the week, please remind them to get a head start over the weekends. The weekly task is always due on Fridays.

Writing: We are currently writing persuasive letters to convince others to be either a loyalist or a patriot.   We will soon be writing school reflections and 4th Grade in Review Articles.   All of our activities are a collaboration of all that we have learned this year in Writing Workshop.

Math:   We are very happy to be done with the NYS Math Exams.  We are now learning about measurement and time unites.   In Mrs. Gildea’s and Mr. Micieli’s  math classes the students are learning about decimals and fractions.  All of the students will benefit from practicing their multiplication/division facts each night!

Science & Social Studies:
In science, we have completed our electricity unit.  We will be reviewing concepts for the upcoming state test. The first part is a written exam and the second part is a practicum portion.  Our last unit of study involves owl pellets and learning about ecology.
During social studies, the students have wrapped up their unit on the American Revolution.  We will soon be learning about New York as a young state, the Erie Canal, and government.
